    Architectural Stroll

Have fun exploring, discovering and enjoying!

There’s so much to admire on Mainau: not forgetting the architectural treasures. We invite you to explore the park and gardens, nature and botany using all your senses. The following introduces some of architectural highlights. Admire the various buildings like the Teutonic Order’s castle, castle church, archway building, Gardeners’ tower, Swedes’ tower and Comturey tower.

    Castle Church St. Marien

The castle and castle church St. Marien make a unique baroque ensemble. It is one of the most art-historical places of interest to be seen around Lake Constance. The interior of the church is a festively cheerful world of sculptures, frescos and stucco. It’s no wonder that this beautiful castle church is popular for weddings and church and secular concerts. The Castle of the Teutonic Order

The Castle of the Teutonic Order is the architectural focal point on the island and a splendid setting for various occasions. It is the heart of the island and where the Bernadotte family lives. The castle café and some parts of the castle are open to the public for refreshments, exhibitions and events (No. 30 on the map of the island). More…

    The Archway Building

The service centre and some of Mainau’s administrative offices are housed in the Archway Building. Brochures on Mainau and the Lake Constance area are available here. The gatehouse dates back to 1764, the archway building to the 19th century. In the old days, the gatehouse was reached by crossing a bridge over the castle moat (No. 28 on the map of the island). Gardeners´ Tower

The Gardeners’ Tower, also known as the Fortified Tower, tells the history of Mainau during the Middle Ages and 19th century. The Lake Constance Foundation and Mainau have turned it into a modern information centre.
The multi-vision screen showing amazing pictures of the Lake Constance landscape and also its future perspectives is very impressive (No. 29 on the map of the island). More…

    Swedes´ Tower

The slim Swedes’ Tower, close to the botanical informational wine trail, was built in the 16th century. Its pyramidal roof and wooden panelling date from the 19th century. It was chiefly used as a watch tower overlooking the mainland during the Thirty Years’ War (No. 23 on the map of the island).  More…

    Comturey Tower

The Comturey Tower and cellar, lying at the foot of the castle by the shore, is a popular place to eat on the island. The tower stump below the castle is thought to have been used as living quarters by the Teutonic Order in the Middle Ages.  The upper floors were demolished during the course of Baroque reconstruction. The cellar vaults were used to store supplies in the old days e.g. wine from the Mainau wine press. Today, you can see something special: the so-called ‘Zehntfass’ a 25,000 litre barrel. (No. 43 on the map of the island). More...
