Rabbits, hens, goats, Shetland ponies, donkeys, sheep, cats and a cow and her calf all live at the Mainau farmyard.
Visitors can go into part of the goat’s pen. The goats love being stroked. The Shetland pony stallion, Raufbold von Rosengarten, has sired several gold-medal winning foals.
If the weather is fine during the season, there’s pony riding in the arena.
The Black Forest Hinterwälder cow and calf can usually be seen at the farmyard from May to September time. They are an endangered species; as are the brown hill sheep and the chicken breed (Deutscher Sperber).
Farmyards not only have animals but also gardens with vegetable patches! Our farm garden is in the middle of the animal pens in front of the stalls. Plants such as salads, herbs, fruit and vegetables are grown here.
