    Palm House

    Under palms all year round

Palms, oranges and parrots adorn the castle terrace –the exotic heart of Mainau. The architecture of the Palm House is interesting and during the colder months of the year the Palm House is a most welcoming oasis. Mainau obtained special permission from the City of Constance for the Palm House building to stand all year round from 2006 - 2016. More than 20 different types of palm trees can be seen here, including a Canary Island date palm (Phoenix canariensis) which was planted in 1888 and is now over 15 metres tall. One of the old citrus trees originally planted by Grand Duke Friedrich is also housed here.

The Palm House makes a splendid setting for plant shows starting with the famous orchid show in spring.
It is also a wonderful venue for wedding receptions and concerts. Spend a few relaxing moments in the Schlosscafé or on the terrace in the Palm House. Both are open all year round.
The Palm House is also special from an architectural point of view. It was completely rebuilt in 1997 and covers an area of 1,270 square metres; the highest point being 17.4 metres. The double-glazed roof and side panels are made of highly transparent acrylic glass. Floor heating provides the required temperature for the orchid show and other events when needed.
