April Blooms

In April there will be thousands of tulips, daffodils, cherry blossoms, magnolias, azaleas and other spring flowers coming in your field of vision and bringing a welcome splash of colour to Mainau Island.

May we introduce you to Mr. Fokker. It's a delightful anemone with dark-centered flowers, velvety, purple-blue petals and feathery foliage. 

There is one aristocratice flower providing an eye-catcher in our flower displays: Crown Imperialis Lily. Fritillaria imperialis has bell-shaped flowers topped by a crown of small leaves and it is also known as tears of Mary. They are supposed to have a bit of a stench.

Hyacinths exude its sweet fragrance at the Mediterranean terraces.

The epitome of spring are over 5,000 tulips and daffodils prettify the Italian-Floral-Water-Cascade

Red Flowering Currant (Ribes sanguineum) flowers with its vermillion petals in the Roof Garden. You only can see that shrub blooming while springtime. The rest of the year that shrub is a good garden citizen, greening up nicely. Red Flowering Currant attracts not only our eyes but also busy pollinators like bees and some butterflies. 

Stachyurus Praecox, also known as Spiketail,is welcoming spring in the garden with its tiny yellow flower chains

The beauty of thousands of daffodils can be recognized throughout the garden

Over 450 varieties of tulips transform Mainau Island into a radiant ocean of flowers, you will find them here: Spring Avenue, flower beds at the Mediterranean Terrace with its swan font as well as in the Lakeside Garden

Bergenia flowers enjoying sunshine in the perennial garden and in the roof garden. Bergenias are widely used evergreen plants also known as elephant ears.

Near the Swede's Tower,the vineyard and the insect garden you can watch the blooming of several trees of genus Prunus.


The flowering periods mentioned above only provide approximate information.
