A visit to Mainau Island is an unforgettable experience at any time of year. Here you will find a selection of flowers, trees and shrubs that you can discover during a walk in August:
On the Mediterranean Terrace [36], our exotic palm trees and the breathtaking view over Lake Constance offer a moment of holiday feeling.
Colorful Fuchsia species can be seen, amongst others, at the Gardener’s Tower [26] and in the flowerbeds on the shore of Lake Constance.
Next to the Italian Rose Garden [33], the Japanese pagoda tree provides cooling shade on hot days.
The Mediterranean Terrace and the Area of Fountains [36] invite you to enjoy South African flowers, for example African lilies (Agapanthus).
Indian shot or African arrowroot (Canna indica) sets color accents from red to apricot and orange among the summer blossoms in the flowerbeds.
Evening primroses, Echinacea, pot marigold and co.: Learn interesting facts about the effects of various medicinal plants in the Herb Garden [11].
Plumeria, also known as frangipani, brings Hawaiian flair to Mainau Island.
Hibiscus flowers (Hibiscus syriacus) love their sunny location between the Herb Garden [11] and the Insect Garden [17].
Tight clusters of rose-purple flowers are characteristic for purpletop vervain, clustertop vervain or Argentinian vervain (Verbena bonariensis). It almost seems to float among the summer blossoms in the flowerbeds and in the Shrub Garden [44].
Purple coneflowers (Echinacea) are popular summer-blooming shrubs. They can be seen among the summer blossoms in the flowerbeds and in the Shrub Garden [44].
Showy yellow Rudbeckia flowers attract attention at the Italian Style Flower and Water Cascade [37] or in the Shrub Garden [44].
At the Gardener’s Tower [29], the fiery red flowers of the coral tree (Erythrina christagalli) are visible already from a distance.
They look as if they are not from this world: With their bizarre, but beautiful appearance passion flowers are real eye-catchers.
Succulents are natural works of art and appear in numerous shapes and colors. They can be seen on the Mediterranean Terrace [36] and next to the Italian Rose Garden [33].
Bougainvillea belong to the the Nyctaginaceae, the four o’clock family. The actual flowers are white and surrounded by large colorful bracts.
Lindheimer’s beeblossom or white gaura (Gaura lindheimeri) with its bushy growth can be found, amongst others, in the Shrub Garden [44].
In August, the pond is decorated with a carpet of water lilies (Nymphaea).
The hibiscus shrub 'Mauvelous' not only carries spectacular, large flowers, but is also a hardy plant.
