Be inspired by the bare beauty of Mainau Island during January. Enjoy a wonderful wintery walk and you will find early bloomers, leafless trees, interesting-looking textures and gorgeous views of Lake Constance. Our warm and tropical Butterfly House helps to escape from the winter cold. Here you will find bromeliads and other flourish exotical plants.
Oregon Grape (Mahonia x media 'Wintersun') with its spiny leafes and yellow flowers will attract your attention at the Shore Garden.
The most stunning feature of this snake-bark maple variety is the pinky color of its branches and bark. (Acer conspicuum ‘Red Flamingo‘). You will find this small tree next to the stairs to our Rooftop Garden.
The exfoliating bark of Plane Trees (Platanus x hispanica) makes them look like military camouflage.
The fluffy seed heads of Old Man's Beard (Clematis vitalba) persist at the pergola of our Italian Rose Garden during winter season
The Chinese Windmill Palm (Trachycarpus fortunei) is quite a tolerant plant even during winter season at Mediterrannean Terrace covered with snow.
The Red Sentinel Crabapple with its cherry-like deep red fruits can be find on our Roof Top Garden.
Tall and majestic specimen of Grass (Miscanthus sinensis ‘Little Fountain‘) you will find at Roof Top Garden and the Shrub Garden
The Magnolia trees (Magnolia grandiflora) shows off its big fuzzy flower buds in the Italian Rose Garden and the Shrub Garden.
The Giant Sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) is a true giant or in German mammoth tree in Mainau Arboretum.
Look for the Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia reginae) with its orange and purple crane-shaped flowers while visiting our Palm House.
You will find different varieties of Witch Hazel (Hamamelis) blooming in our Shore Garden. Their blooming time starts in early January depending on the weather conditions. Peak occurs between February and March.
The Wintersweet (Chimonanthus praecox) is a shrub native to China. Its white-yellow fragrant flowers appear before leaves. You will find it near the Café Vergissmeinnicht and the Archway Building.
The Paperbush (Edgeworthia chrysantha) can be found in the Dahlia Garden and the Arboretum. The flowers of that medium sized shrub have a yellow pom-pom like looking and its fragrance is still amazing during winter times.
Shrubs and trees with attractive winter bark can be found all over Mainau Island.
It's not yet in bloom, but the buds of our rhododendrons are still there to show up in late April.
The flowering periods mentioned above only provide approximate information. They depend on the temperature and the precipitation and can therefor vary.
