What's in Bloom

May Blooms

A visit to Mainau Island is an unforgettable experience at any time of year. Here you will find a selection of flowers, trees and shrubs that you can discover during a walk in May:

With their round flower heads and slender, leafless stems alliums are real eye-catchers. They are commonly known as giant onions and can be seen, amongst others, in the „Visitor’s Garden“ [18] or on the Roof Garden [48].

The Walk of Wild and Shrub Roses [16] is characterized by a certain wildness and intense scent.

Popular spring plants in different shapes and colors bloom in the Dahlia Garden [38].

At the „Mainau Kinderland“ [12], this unique tree attracts attention with its beautiful decorations: the handkerchief tree or dove-tree (Davidia involucrata).

A welcome rain: Golden rain (Laburnum) offers a spectacular display of yellow flowers at the Gardener’s Tower [29].

Different kinds of Cornus species, also known as dogwoods, thrive in the Peony Garden [37] next to the Italian Style Flower and Water Cascade and on the Roof Garden [48].

In the Shrub Garden [44], different representatives of the Iris species are in bloom.

Iceland poppy (Papaver nudicaule) with its wide variety of flower colors is an important part of the spring bloom. It can be seen in the Dahlia Garden [38] and the Area of Fountains [36].

The Rhododendron Walk [39] is one of the absolute highlights in May.

The flowerbeds on the shore of Lake Constance show varieties of late-blooming tulips (Tulipa).

Different peony shrubs bloom with grace in the Peony Garden [37].

Covered by blue rain (Wisteria), the pergola in the Italian Rose Garden [33] is the perfect place for a little break.
