What blooms on Mainau Island in August?

They look like they come from another world: with their bizarrely beautiful appearance, passion flowers(Passiflora) cast a spell over us. The natural distribution of passion flowers extends mainly across the tropical and subtropical regions of South America as well as parts of Central and South America.

The Indian tunbergia(Thunbergia mysorensis) is also known as the sky flower. It belongs to the acanthus family and, as the name suggests, it originates from the Indian subcontinent. This tropical climbing plant stands out with its up to 60-centimetre-long, bicolored flower clusters. 

The gardenhibiscus (Hibiscus syriacus 'Blue Bird') is a member of the mallow family. Its flowers reach a diameter of up to 12 centimetres.

The perennial hibiscus(Hibiscus moscheutos) is a real flower giant: the pink flowers of the 'Mauvelous' variety in the perennial garden are spectacular and grow up to 25 centimetres tall! The mallow plant is hardy and originates from North America.

The national flower of Argentina is the coral tree(Erythrina christa-galli), which is planted here in the riverside garden and by the archway building. Its coral-red inflorescences, which can grow up to 30 centimetres long, are characteristic. This makes the tree, which is kept as a container plant in our latitudes and is not hardy, a real eye-catcher!

Clerodendrum bungei, which originates from China, flowers in August. Its pink-red false umbels consist of small, star-shaped individual flowers that are delicately scented and popular with insects.

Beautiful plays of light can be observed in the perennial garden between the delicate flowers of the goldenrod(Solidago 'Ledsham') and the umbrellas of the yellow coneflower(Rudbeckia fulgida). Both the flower panicles of the goldenrod and the ray-shaped flowers of the rudbeckia are valuable food plants for bees and insects.

The fuchsias are colorful and species-rich, for example at the gardener's tower and in the riverside garden. Their delicate flowers are reminiscent of dancers in tutus. 

Creative plant combinations with banana plants, grasses and coneflowers provide tropical lushness in the beds in the riverside garden.
