Precious exotics in the castle courtyard
Every year from June to mid-September, the historic citrus collection can be admired on the Mainau Island.
The collection is displayed in the palace courtyard in elegant white planters in the style of Versailles. Orange, grapefruit, limes, cedratas, lemons and other varieties exude a fresh, seductive fragrance that conjures up a Mediterranean ambience on the island of flowers.
The history of Mainau's unique citrus collection
The tradition of citrus plants on the island of Mainau dates back to 1866, when Grand Duke Friedrich I brought the first specimens to the island. Since 1968, the collection has been expanded by Count Lennart Bernadotte, bringing together particularly old and rare varieties from various botanical gardens and private collections of old Italian ruling families, including the gardens of the Medicis.
