Created in 1982, the Italian Flower Water Staircase on the island of Mainau elegantly connects the Mediterranean Terraces with the lower-lying shore area. A watercourse of Calanca gneiss from Ticino forms this artistic staircase, whose sequence of steps is based on the style of Italian Renaissance gardens.
The slender silhouette of the columnar yew (Taxus baccata 'Fastiagata Robusta') accompanies the steps, and during the spring and summer months, a variety of alternating plants lend the steps a Mediterranean flair. In autumn, the splendid tree coloring sets additional, attractive accents.
