Flowering times

What blooms on Mainau Island in September?

The signs in September point to autumn here on the flower island: warm late summer days alternate with the first cool autumnal days. The roses and hawthorn bear their red fruits, the dahlias begin to light their fireworks of color in the dahlia garden and the scent of the cake tree, reminiscent of gingerbread and caramel, wafts through the air from time to time.

Please note: flowering times are approximate and depend on the weather

The information on flowering times is merely indicative, as it depends on weather conditions and annual fluctuations. The pictures shown give an impression of last year's flowering periods. We recommend that you enquire about the current flowering status before your visit to Mainau. Please feel free to contact us at info@mainau.de.

Rotweiße Kaktusdahlie

The star of Mainau in September is the dahlia! The Mexican dahlia, which captivates us from year to year with its diversity of varieties, ignites a gigantic firework display of color in the dahlia garden with over 250 varieties.

Dunkelrote Blüte der Schokoladen-Kosmee mit Biene

It is probably the only chocolate that doesn't melt in the sun: the dark red chocolate flower or black cosmos(Cosmos atrosanguineus) exudes its delicious chocolate aroma in summer flowerbeds. The composite flower is perennial, but not hardy in our latitudes.

Weiße Blüte der Herbst-Anemone

With its countless white and pink flowers, the autumn anemone(Anemone hupehensis) cuts a fine figure on the island of Mainau in late summer! Until the first frost, the buttercup plant guarantees elegance in the park.

Weiße Blüten des Sieben Söhne des Himmels-Strauch

The Seven Sons of Heaven shrub(Heptacodium miconioides) displays its white, highly fragrant flowers in September. The honeysuckle plant is an attractive addition to the park due to its late flowering period and a valuable source of food for insects.

Blaue Blüten der Hummelsschaukel

The bumblebee swing(Salvia uliginosa) is a 70 to 100 centimeter tall perennial that attracts insects of all kinds with its sky-blue flowers. The bobbing "feast(ing) place" is native to South America and can be found here in the flower beds near the gardener's tower and in the dahlia garden.

Frucht der Weidenblättrigen Birne

The willow-leaved pear(Pyrus salicifolia) is a Mediterranean ornamental shrub that can be found at our plantation at Platanenweg 5 and on the roof garden. This cultivated pear from the Middle East bears fruit in September, which looks like small olives.

Schnitt-Knoblauch mit weißen Blüten

Cut garlic(Allium tuberosum) beautifies our park with its star-shaped flowers in pure white. The allium is native to Asia and is popular with insects.

Fetthenne und Perlkörbchen

The pink, star-shaped flowers of the stonecrop(Sedum) are a feasting paradise for bees and other insects. Combined with the white of the pearl basket(Anaphalis margaritacea), they create a harmonious color contrast on the roof garden.

Hagebuttenstrauch

Now in September, the roses in the promenade of wild and shrub roses adorn themselves with their fall fruits, the rose hips.
