Nature Reserves Obere & Untere Güll

Adjacent to the bridge to Mainau Island there are the two nature reserves "Obere Güll" and "Untere Güll" (approx. 90 ha). In the summer season, the boundary of the shallow water zone is often recognisable by a clear colour difference in the water.  Due to their shallow water and reed zones
the bays are important breeding, resting and wintering areas for a large number of bird species, some of which are rare.

Great crested grebes and red-crested pochards breed in the shore area. Protected by the high reeds, water rails and reed warblers breed. The Mainau bays serve, for example, as an important moulting place for the red-crested pochards where they change their feathers. In winter, there are also coots, grey herons, whooper swans, teals, gadwalls, pochards, herons, goldeneyes, common gulls and Mediterranean gulls in the two bays.

Haubentaucher

Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus)
Easily observable water bird, which can be found on Lake Constance all year round. The birds can stay under water for up to 45 seconds where they eat small fish, crustaceans or aquatic insects.

Blässhuhn

Coot (Fulica atra)
Found all year round in large groups on all freshwaters. Especially during courtship and breeding season
frequent territorial fights can be observed.

Kolbenente

Red-crested Pochard (Netta rufina)
Conspicuous due to the large orange-brown feathers covering the head of the males, can be observed all year round on Lake Constance. The females often lay their eggs in foreign nests and have them hatched by other birds.

Teichrohrsänger im Schilf

Reed-Warbler (Acrocephalus scirpaceus)
This bird is more likely to be heard than seen - only in the summer, as it spends the winter as long-distance migrant in Africa. It is one of the fastest flying birds, covering a distance of about 2 m per second.
