Reeds and Shallow Water Zone

As one of the last pre-Alpine lakes, Lake Constance has a water level dependent on seasonal fluctuations. The difference in the normal course of the year ist about 2 metres. This favours near-natural vegetation zoning, as well as shallow water and reed zones close to the shores. Reed-covered shores are a valuable and species-rich habitat.

It offers space for birds, insects, fish and amphibians. Together with the mussels living in the water, the up to 5m high reed plants also clean the water – a kind of biological sewage treatment plant for the lake.

Flachwasserzone Bodensee

The dense reed belt of the shallow water zone slows down the waves and prevents the shore from being eroded, that means washed out. However, the reeds do not only serve to stabilise the soil.

Bodenseeufer im Sonnenuntergang

There are different living conditions within the shallow water zone affecting the local range of species which varies depending on the incident light, water movement and vegetation colonisation.

Libelle im Schilf

In the shallow water zones, small fish species and insects, such as mosquitoes, stone flies, caddisflies,  mayflies and dragonflies use the cover of the vegetation for their reproduction, for feeding and partly also as a year-round habitat.

The reeds in the shore area also clean the water by binding nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus. But also purification by microorganisms is stimulated as the structure of the reeds allows oxygen to reach the root zone which the microorganisms need.
