Digital accessibility on the Mainau Island website

Digital Accessibility Statement

The island of Mainau attaches great importance to the equal participation of all people—both locally and digitally. We strive to design our website www.mainau.de in such a way that it is as accessible as possible for all users, regardless of individual limitations.

legal basis

This accessibility statement applies to the website www.mainau.de and is based on the provisions of the Accessibility Enhancement Act (BFSG), the requirements of Section 10 (1) of the State Disability Equality Act (L-BGG) and the international Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, conformance level AA.

Status of compliance with requirements

This website is partially compliant with the above accessibility guidelines. There are currently still some individual pieces of content or functions that are not fully accessible. We are continuously working to identify and remove these barriers.

Non-accessible content

Despite all efforts, the following content is currently not accessible or only accessible to a limited extent:

Images, links, and headings

Reason for the restriction: The Mainau GmbH website is maintained by various colleagues and employees of external agencies. As a result, the degree of accessibility varies between individual contributions. We regularly raise awareness among the content editors involved about the importance of accessibility. This includes, among other things:

  • Some images on the website do not have meaningful alternative text that explains the content depicted. This makes it difficult for users with visual impairments to fully understand the content.
  • Links are not always accompanied by meaningful link texts.
  • Occasionally, headings are not arranged hierarchically correctly, which makes navigation difficult.

Action: We ensure that accessibility is continuously improved through regular training.

color contrasts

Reason for the restriction: The design of our website is based on the existing corporate design of Mainau GmbH, which includes clearly defined color values and design guidelines. In some areas—particularly in text elements in continuous text or link labels—this can lead to color contrasts that do not fully meet accessibility requirements.

Action: We are currently examining how we can add higher-contrast colors to individual elements, such as external links and interactive buttons, without compromising the visual identity of the brand. The aim is to improve accessibility for people with visual impairments, particularly in terms of readability and orientation.

Navigation elements (ARIA menus)

Reason for the limitation: Some navigation areas of the website use ARIA roles to mark up menus. This may currently result in deviations from the ARIA standard, especially if menu containers do not contain the required menu entries. This may impair usability with screen readers or keyboard aids.

Action: We are currently analyzing the use of ARIA roles and gradually adapting our navigation structure so that it can be used fully and correctly with assistive technologies.

PDF documents

Reason for the restriction: Some PDF documents integrated into our website are not yet fully accessible. This applies in particular to older files that do not have the required semantic structure (tags), alternative texts for graphics, or a correct reading order. In addition, color contrasts or the usability of forms in these files may be limited.

Action: We strive to make new PDF documents as accessible as possible and to gradually revise existing content. If you need a specific document in a format that is accessible to you, please contact us—we will be happy to provide you with an accessible alternative.

Use of understandable language

Reason for the restriction: It has not yet been possible to provide the relevant texts in simple and understandable language.

Action: Our goal is to provide better coverage in these areas in the future. Implementation is currently underway.

We are endeavoring to remedy these deficiencies gradually.

Accessibility toolbar

The accessibility toolbar offers adjustments that enable users with visual impairments to use the website without barriers. It is located on the right-hand side of the screen and can be activated by clicking on the corresponding icon. The toolbar is available on all common devices (desktop, tablet, smartphone) and can be conveniently switched on and off via the icon.

The toolbar also offers the option to adjust the font size, increase the contrast, and display the page in grayscale. These features are particularly helpful for users with visual impairments, including those with color blindness, and improve the readability and usability of the page. Additional adjustments, such as switching to a high-contrast color scheme, help to make the content more visible. We are continuously working to further optimize these functions.

Preparation of this accessibility statement

This statement was created on June 26, 2025. It was last updated on June 27, 2025.

This statement is based on a self-assessment of our website in accordance with the requirements of the State Disability Equality Act (§ 4 (2), No. 1 L-BGG Implementation Ordinance (DVO)) . This is a method provided for by law, which organizations use to independently check the extent to which their websites meet the requirements for digital accessibility. Based on these results, technical adjustments have been implemented and the site is now being further optimized from an editorial perspective.

We regularly review the accessibility statement to ensure that it is up to date.
