The scent of roses is in the air on the island of Mainau in June, as more and more buds open every day in the Italian Rose Garden and along the promenade of wild and shrub roses. The most beautiful climbing roses bloom here, but new varieties also shine in the park in magnificent colors and shapes.
The hydrangeas begin to bloom on the roof garden and the glittering Lake Constance with its many boats provides a pure summer feeling. For all those who long for a shady spot on hot summer days, the arboretum offers the perfect place to relax and enjoy.

The queen of flowers, the rose, makes its grand entrance in June in the Italian Rose Garden. The pergolas and tall stems bloom profusely and in many different varieties.
Summer bloomers in Bordeaux red: the bushy flower balls of Allium amethystinum float in the perennial garden and on the roof garden. This ornamental allium is originally native to southern Europe, grows to a height of up to 140 cm and is swarmed by insects.
Mediterranean beauty: The laurel-leaved rockrose(Cistus laurifolius) is decorative with white corollas and golden yellow stamens. Its dark foliage exudes a spicy scent.
The individual flowers of daylilies(Hemerocallis) often only last for a single day, so quickly head to the perennial garden and admire the splendor of the various daylilies. The robust, hardy and, above all, easy-care perennial with over 81,000 varieties makes the hearts of plant lovers worldwide beat faster.
Summer flower classics: hydrangeas(Hydrangea) are beginning to paint a colorful picture on our roof garden with their opulent balls of flowers. They can be found here in many different colors such as white, pink, blue and purple.
Noble, upright and graceful: with its many small, white flowers and purple center, the Chaix's Regal Mullein(Verbascum chaixii 'Album') commands an audience in the perennial garden.
It looks like a mixture of chicory and cornflower, the blue-flowered rattle flower(Catananche caerulea) in the dahlia garden. This heat artist blooms from June to September. A rustling sound is produced when the flowers swaying in the wind rub against the dry seed heads. This sound is reminiscent of a rattle and is therefore reflected in the German trivial name.
The trumpet tree(Catalpa bignonioides) in the arboretum adorns itself with its heart-shaped green leaves and also displays its white flower panicles. It originates from North America.
The citrus collection of the island of Mainau, with its rare and historic species, is traditionally exhibited in the castle courtyard from June. Citrus plants have a long history on Mainau. Grand Duke Friedrich I brought the first specimens to the island back in 1866 and had them planted on the southern side of the palace next to the palm trees and subtropical exotics. The collection was expanded and continued by Count Lennart Bernadotte in 1968.
