Flowering times

What blooms on Mainau Island in May?

Welcome to the merry month of May on the island of Mainau! Fresh, green and colorful - this is the best way to describe our park in this time of spring: The rhododendrons bloom profusely in the riverside garden and on the rhododendron slope, the first shrub peonies in the peony garden open their elegant flower bowls kissed by the warm rays of the sun and the flower balls of the ornamental leek float in the beds in the dahlia garden.

Please note: flowering times are approximate and depend on the weather

The information on flowering times is merely indicative, as it depends on weather conditions and annual fluctuations. The pictures shown give an impression of last year's flowering periods. We recommend that you enquire about the current flowering status before your visit to Mainau. Please feel free to contact us at info@mainau.de.

Violette Blütenkugel eines Zierlauchs

They can now be admired again in the roof, dahlia and perennial gardens: the impressive flower balls of the ornamentalallium. Its magnificent, round flower balls consist of delicate, star-shaped individual flowers.

Blüte des Taschentuchbaums

If you cross the south-eastern arboretum, you should definitely look out for our handkerchief tree(Davidia involucrata). Its flowers are reminiscent of waving handkerchiefs. Each inflorescence consists of a pair of white petals, up to 30 cm long, surrounding a spherical, red-purple inflorescence. These petals are actually bracts and serve as a visual stimulus to attract insects for successful pollination.

Weiße Rhododendronblüte

The rhododendrons in the riverside garden and on the rhododendron slope in different colors and varieties are definitely our May highlight! The flowering shrub originates from eastern Asia and belongs to the heather family.

Violette Schwertlilie

Irises, also known as irises, bloom in the perennial garden and enchant us with their rich colors and elegant growth. The elegant perennial is named after the Greek goddess Iris, the goddess of the rainbow. Iris flowers come in countless color nuances and variations, spotted, speckled or with filigree veins, just as dazzling as a rainbow.

Strauch-Pfingstrose mit drei rot-weißen Blüten

From May, they brighten up the peony and perennial garden on the island of Mainau: The shrub peonies and perennial peonies now delight us with their large flowers, pleasant fragrance and variety.

Toona Sinensis im Parkteil Farn und Fuchsia

Against the green background of the fern and fuchsia section of the park, the pink shoots of the Chinese sumac tree(Toona sinensis 'Flamingo') stand out particularly well and provide beautiful splashes of color. Over the course of the summer, the feathery foliage turns green.

Rosa Schmetterlingsblüten des Judasbaumes

The common Judas tree(Cercis siliquastrum) is a special tree in our roof garden. The striking thing about this flowering shrub is the pink-purple butterfly flowers that grow directly on the wood and also sprout from the trunk. This abundant food supply is particularly attractive to bees and other insects.

Weiße Blüten des Bauernjasmins

May is also the time of year when we can smell the wonderfully intense scent of farmer's jasmine(Philadelphus). The ornamental shrub blooms on the roof garden, in the promenade of wild and shrub roses and on the castle garden meadow. It attracts numerous insects with its abundant white flowers.

Wildrosenblüte

In the promenade of wild and shrub roses, the wild beauties begin to bloom and beguile with their intense fragrance.
