Flowering times

What blooms on Mainau Island in November?

At no other time of the year is the island of Mainau bathed in this unique light as it is in November. Shimmering golden sunlight makes the leaves of the trees glow before they fall. Long walks through the park are just the thing to slow down and enjoy the tranquillity of nature. Berries and other fruit decorations provide little eye-catchers.

To warm up, we recommend a detour to our tropical butterfly house.

Please note: flowering times are approximate and depend on the weather

Brücke zur Insel Mainau im Herbst

Colorful autumn colors and a special light atmosphere welcome guests at the mainland bridge to the island of Mainau.

Violette Herbstaster

It is the epitome of an autumnal bee pasture: the smooth-leaved aster(Aster novi-belgii) 'Schöne von Dietlikon' continues to impress in November with its abundance of purple flowers. This variety is very robust and frost-hardy.

Gelbe Ginkgoblätter bedecken den Boden

The fallen, golden-yellow leaves of the ginkgo at the castle church form a carpet of foliage in the fall.

Luftaufnahme Mediterran-Terrassen im Herbst auf der Insel Mainau

The trees on the island of Mainau display their colorful leaves in autumn, as the chlorophyll in the leaves is broken down. The carotenes, which are responsible for the yellow and red coloring of the leaves, are now revealed.

Rote Früchte des Sibirischen Holzapfels

With its ruby-red fruit, the Siberian crab apple(Malus x robusta 'Red Sentinel') delights us on the roof garden. The autumn ornament also delights winter birds, as they eat the small apples.

Araukarie auf der Insel Mainau

The Andean fir or araucaria(Araucaria araucana) is one of the oldest plant species on our planet. This tree with its prickly, scale-like needles is a special eye-catcher and was already native to the earth in the time of the dinosaurs.

Herbst-Kamelie auf der Insel Mainau

The evergreen autumn camellia(Camellia sasanqua 'Cleopatra') adds a splash of color to the roof garden. The pink flowers exude a pleasant scent.

Herbstfärbung in der Metasequoia-Allee auf der Insel Mainau

Immerse yourself in a sea of copper: the autumn coloring of the Metasequoia avenue is the highlight of a visit to Mainau Island in November. The falling needles of the primeval sequoia trees then cover the entire ground.

Tropischer Schmetterling an Japanischen Eibisch

The Japanese lantern or Japanese marshmallow(Hibiscus schizopetalus) is the ideal place for our tropical butterflies to hang out.
