Flowering times

What blooms on Mainau Island in March?

In March, we are delighted to see the comeback of crocuses, daffodils and camellias on the island of Mainau. But that's not all, as the first butterflies have already unfurled their wings and are dancing merrily through the air.

Since 1973 the orchid show in the Palm House has been the traditional prelude to the flowering highlights on the island of Mainau. Over 3,000 exotic orchid beauties in their astonishing variety of shapes and colors are on display. Discover the vibrant colors of Phalaenopsis, Vanda and Cattleya orchids as well as botanical rarities artfully arranged by our gardeners.

Please note: flowering times are approximate and depend on the weather

The information on flowering times is merely indicative, as it depends on weather conditions and annual fluctuations. The pictures shown give an impression of last year's flowering periods. We recommend that you enquire about the current flowering status before your visit to Mainau. Please feel free to contact us at info@mainau.de.

Märzenbecher in Frühlingssonne

The spring snowflakes(Leucojum vernum) in our meadows and flowerbeds are a symbol of the beginning of spring. With their white flowers, they herald the end of winter.

Pinke Blüte einer Kamelie vor blauem Frühlingshimmel

Camellias bloom in shades of pink, red and white in the riverside garden. These exotic flowering wonders with their glossy, dark green foliage are also an attractive eye-catcher all year round.

Gelbe Krokusse auf Frühlingswiese

They radiate a real spring atmosphere: crocuses! With their bright colors, they form gigantic carpets of flowers in our park.

Blüten des Japanischen Papierstrauchs

The yellow, intensely fragrant flowers of Edgeworthia chrysantha, also known as Japanese paperbush, bring a touch of spring into the cold season. The daphne plant can be found in our arboretum and dahlia garden.

Frühe Tulpensorte blüht auf Wiese

They are always the first on Mainau: the tulips from the Kaufmanniana group are characterized by their low growth and striking flower shape. When the sun shines, the flowers open in a star shape and close again in the evening. They bloom in the meadow areas of the arboretum, in the perennial garden and along the spring avenue

Ährige Scheinhasel vor blauem Himmel

The spiked hazel(Corylopsis spicata) heralds the arrival of spring on the Grand Duke Friedrich Terrace. The witch hazel plant is a valuable source of nectar for bees and bumblebees.

Pinke Magnolienblüten am Baum

Majestic classic: Magnolias with their breathtaking large flowers are real eye-catchers at the Lauenhaus. The glossy green leaves provide a wonderful contrast to the flowers and remain attractive all year round.

Narzissen blühen am Hang

Daffodils are the absolute spring classic. With their trumpet flowers, they spread joy and optimism. In the perennial garden and the riverside garden, the daffodils shine from afar and soon they will form a radiant sea of yolk and vanilla yellow colors along the spring avenue.

Gelbe Blüten der Kornellkirsche

Cornelian cherry(Cornus mas) is a radiant harbinger of spring with bright yellow flowers that appear before the leaves emerge. Its delicate flowers are appreciated by many insects.
