The Swedish Cross

The Swedish Cross has decorated the shore between the island and the mainland for several centuries and greets Mainau visitors. The name of the cross originates from Sweden’s reign on Mainau Island during the 30 Years’ War (1618-1648).  There’s a legend as to how it came to be at its present spot:  The Swedes plundered the island at the end of their two year reign. The bronze crucifixion group was one of the things they took with them. However, it was so heavy that the Swedish troops had to leave it behind at its present spot.
